I believe that there is evidence to prove that the final battle is a spiritual one or a psychological one. Rama and Ravana are fighting and they have help from the Gods. This would make it spiritual. Ravana summons spirits and weapons from the Gods. Rama gets a chariot from the Gods. Ravana's face changes hencing at the fact that Rama has defeated Ravana. I also think that the ending was a fight literally between to people, however spiritually it was a fight to regain the correct dharma to the world.
